The Middle School was known as ‘Intermediate School’ until and has been in operation in various forms at Hutchins since , catering to a mix of boys in Years 6, 7 and 8. In a new Intermediate School, consisting entirely of 70 first year secondary students, opened in the former Sub-Primary Block at Sandy Bay under F J Williams (1960–69).
This ‘experimental venture’ grew to include the second-year boys. After a temporary return to Macquarie Street, by the Middle School was in full operation at Sandy Bay. It had doubled in size and provided a broad range of subjects.
Under long-serving Master of Middle School, John Millington (1970–95), a new Middle School consisting of classrooms, audio-visual studio, performance space, offices and allied facilities, opened in . A Year 6–9 review conducted in led to the introduction of a K–8 timetable, placing Middle School as a self-contained unit within a Lower School complex.
The Middle School was completely rebuilt in –, with the construction of a new building adjoining the Auditorium creating light, airy and open classrooms and offices surrounding an attractive Megaquad for outdoor activities.
